Description

A mental health first-aider is needed when someone is struggling to cope with an ongoing mental health condition or when they are going through a mental health episode or crisis. Their role is to spot signs of potential problems, assess possible risks to the person and others, listen without judgement, give assistance or encourage the person to seek further help.

Throughout this course you will explore the different types of mental health issues and the signs and symptoms. You will then look at the roles and responsibilities of a mental health first-aider and how to recognise when someone is struggling. The course will end by looking at how to put mental health first aid into action.

Please note this course will not qualify you to become a mental health first-aider, instead it should be completed as an introduction into mental health first aid, or for those already qualified to refresh their skills and knowledge.

In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.

You will earn 3 CPD points on completion of the course, this course will take around 3 hours to complete and the certificate will last for two years.

  • Unit 1 – The types of mental health issues – In the first unit you will cover statistics on mental health issues in the UK, a range of mental health issues, factors that can affect mental health, as well as the signs and symptoms of different mental health issues. The unit will finish with exploring the difference between a mental health condition, episode and crisis.
  • Unit 2 – The roles and responsibilities of a mental health first aider – In this unit you will look at the aims of mental health first aid and consider the role and responsibilities of a mental health first-aider, including raising awareness within your organisation of the need for good mental health in order to protect staff well-being.
  • Unit 3 –Recognising when someone is struggling – In this unit you will consider ways to access whether someone is struggling with their mental health, you will also learn about two mental health action plan protocols that can be used when making the judgement. You will also cover how someone with a mental health disability can be helped in the workplace.
  • Unit 4 – Putting mental health first aid into action – In the final unit of the course you will look at how to put attributes and behaviours needed for mental health first aid work into practice and how to encourage others to engage with the support offered. The unit looks at non-urgent and urgent warning signs. It also considers urgent actions that should be taken in the event of an emergency.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
